Smile... It Makes my Day

Lessons Learned

Based on what I have seen on tumblr today, Vegans are not compassionate people.  They only care about their own beliefs.  They very much seem to enjoy harassing people who are making steps towards a more cruelty free existence.

Today I tried to defend a pescatarian.  The vegan attacked this individual for being weak.  Then told me that I was a horrible person because I am vegetarian who eats only locally acquired eggs and goat cheese.  One person even said that being vegetarian and being a meat eater were the same thing.

I am a vegetarian who eat vegan food for 90% of my meals.  That percentage is constantly increasing as I learn about better alternatives. But even if I completely eliminated animal products from my life I will never call myself a vegan now.

Are there any tolerant vegans out there willing to change my mind?

P.S. The tattoo thing I posted was because my coworker and I had been talking about her concern for her kids tattoos just before I saw it.  It was a joke for her, not me being intolerant, I have a tattoo in one of the “no-no” zones.

Go Vegan

you misspelled ”pescetarian”
Surd, don’t expect anyone to become vegan all in one shot. It ain’t going to work and it will just discourage people even further.
I am pescetarian because I want to do the most I can to stop animal cruelty and unethical farming but there are just so many cultural/family issues with my diet so I can’t stop eating fish.
At least I’m trying to do SOMETHING, you don’t have to make everyone feel guilty for not being vegan. It is not going to encourage us to become vegan if you do that, just sayin’.

this is so funny. first of all, i’m not abolishioninstapproach.com, i’m just posting their jpg because it’s a good message. talk to them about the spelling error. secondly, you’re saying that I shouldn’t tell people go vegan, but here you are telling me how to run my blog. do you see the hypocrisy? if you don’t like it, keep off my blog. i can’t imagine that you missed the hint that it was a vegan blog. thirdly, pretty much everyone who eats meat eats it because they were raised in a family and a society in which eating meat is the norm. everyone who ever became vegan gave up some part of their cultural/familial diet. lots of people become vegan all in one shot, too. finally, if you’re a pescetarian, the only animals you’re even arguably saving are pigs, and you aren’t even saving them if you use any of the following: medicines, insulin, chalk, weed killers, fertilizer, cosmetics, floor wax, crayons, antifreeze, glass, china, adhesives, plastics, shoes, paint, chewing gum (unless you buy vegan). if i can convince even one person to go vegan, even if it pisses people like you off, i will consider it a success.

Rants like this one are why I don’t tell people I’m mostly vegan (with occasional eggs and cheese from local farmers who treat their animals right - I know they treat them right, they live on my running route).  Vegans should be encouraging mainstream people to reduce their animal product use, not just blasting them for every little slipup they make.  I love movements like meatless Monday because it teaches people that they don’t need to have meat to eat well. People who were raised to think that a meal required meat to be a meal. Vegan is delicious and easy while helping change the world, that should be the message.
I’ll stick to my moral high ground of supporting people who treat livestock ethically, and you can stick to your moral high ground of alienating everyone who wants to make a difference but doesn’t feel that they can or want to make that sudden a change.
Vegans are seen as a cult instead of being seen as just another eating philosophy. Why? Because they are always trying to convert by making other people feel bad about their choices.

vegans seem extreme because we’re defending the rights of animals, and it makes people who like meat, or even the ones who “just like eggs and cheese once in a while,” “because  I know the animals are treated right,” feel uncomfortable. until you give up the eggs and cheese, and every other animal product, you won’t ever understand. that’s why i personally am so vocal about it, because i like encouraging people to make the change so they can see the truth. you can’t see the truth while your mouth is full of the lie. there’s zero moral high ground in being ok with animal exploitation. of any kind. it’s a ridiculous argument. how would you feel if i kidnapped you and made you work for me, doing something you don’t want to do? what if i told you that i’m going to rape you annually, and take your babies away from you just after you’ve bonded? how about that i’m going to put your sons in a box for two weeks after they’re born, and then kill them; and that i’m going to immediately start raping your daughters annually, too? oh, and by the way, after a few years i’ll be killing you, because your milk production will have slowed down a bit—but not to worry, ‘cause “i’ll kill you ethically!”   i certainly hope you have no objections to that. i can’t imagine why you would, because i’m going to treat you really well!!!  :) rants like yours are why i rant. if your answer to what i just wrote is “but they’re only cows and chickens,” then you’re an asshole. if it’s “that’s not true,” or “not at my pal’s farm,” them you happily living in denial. rants like this one are about the TRUTH. people don’t like this truth because it makes them feel guilty. guilt generally comes from a place of recognition that what you’re doing isn’t really ok.   the animal rights movement isn’t about making people comfortable with their behavior, or applauding baby steps. if it pisses you off, or makes you uncomfortable, too fucking bad.
Great so if buying eggs from my neighbour who has chickens and goats as pets is a crime, I’m going to go back to eating meat.  Thank you for convincing me that my efforts are futile. And for convincing me that some vegans are just jerks.
